Volunteers wanted: Westchester Triathalon

From Coach Julie:

Hi Everyone! I hope you have been enjoying your summer!

With September just around the corner, I have been asked by Coach Eugene Doherty to recruit volunteers who can help out at the Westchester Triathlon in September (19-21). If our Tsunami group can bring 25 volunteers (ages 13 and older), we will have $500 donated to our group! Please see the link below and pass the word!

"We are interested in all ages from 13 upwards as we offer community service to all student volunteers. All volunteers will receive one of our great T-shirts and be part of our Victory Party. There is also a free prize drawing for cool training gear for volunteers.
AND for every group or organization that provides 25 or more people, we will contribute $500 to their cause."

Information about the upcoming season will be mailed next week. See you soon!

If you have any questions, please call Andrea at the Parks Dept. 377-6439.

Regards, Julie Schoenlank

PS (from Frank)...

The Triathalon has a youth event on Sept. 22, which I'm sure some Tsunami swimmer could do a do well in. Here are the age groups and event details:

ages: 7- 10: 100 yard swim/1 mile bike/1mile run ages

ages 11-12: 150 yard swim/2 mile bike/1 mile run ages

ages 13-14: 200 yard swim/3 mile bike/1 mile run

News: Dara Torres is Amazing

(From MSNBC.com)
Dara Torres’ 15th national title felt no different from her first a quarter-century earlier.

The oldest national champion in U.S. swimming history, Torres set an American record in the 50-meter freestyle a few weeks ago in her bid toward a possible fifth Olympics appearance. Competing in the pool in which she qualified for her first Olympics as a teenager in 1984, two years after her first national championship, the 40-year-old Torres came in at 24.53 seconds, a personal best that beat her American record of 24.63 set in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The world record, also set at Sydney, is 24.13 seconds by Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands.

Amazing.

Here's video of a Charlie Rose conversation with Torres from her last comeback attempt --- 7 years ago!!!

Practice starts in (gasp) One Month!

Tsunami family,

Its hard to believe that the championships were almost 5 months ago, and practice for the new season starts in just one month. Like our speedy swimmers, time really does fly.

So I just wanted to remind you that the Tsunami Blog is still here, and give you a few small items to chew on.

* Check out the City of Yonkers also features The Tsunami and Masters team on its official web site (with a picture of Masters team Swimmers Julie, Andrea, and Jennifer.)
http://www.cityofyonkers.com/Index.aspx?page=1366

* We have a new email address:
gotsunamiblog@gmail.com (thats, GO TSUNAMI!)
(You can still reach the blog editor here, or leave a comment on the blog.)

If anyone has any summer swimming stories, or pictures/video that you want to share, send them over and we'll put it on the blog.

See you soon.
